2025 Sloan Research Fellowships

Due to the competitive nature of this funding program, the internal competition is run based on the anticipated September 15, 2025 nomination deadline.

The Sloan Research Fellowships seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise.

Successful candidates for a Fellowship generally have a strong record of significant independent research accomplishments that demonstrate creativity and the potential to become future leaders in the scientific community. Nominated candidates are normally several years past the completion of their Ph.D. in order to accumulate a competitive record of independent, significant research. The Fellowship amount is $75,000 for a two-year term.

Eligibility:

  • Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in chemistry, computer science, Earth system science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, physics, or a related field.
  • Candidates must be tenure-track, though untenured, as of September 15 of the nomination year.
  • Candidate’s faculty position must carry a regular teaching obligation.

* ATTENTION: limited submissions policy exception:  Due to high interest from donors and low numbers of past applications, a second Fellow application will be accepted only if focused on one of the following: 

  • Brain tumors – all types, including rare forms, especially atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT), diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG)/diffuse midline glioma (DMG), and glioblastoma (GBM) 
  • Burkitt lymphoma – all types, especially sporadic 
  • Rhabdoid tumors - Extrarenal 
     

Fellowship Duration

St. Baldrick’s Fellowships are granted for two (2) years of pediatric oncology fellowship training, with an opportunity for one (1) additional year of funding based upon need, significant accomplishment, and approved application.

RDS was notified that NEH will not be running a competition for the Summer Stipends program this fall. 

Faculty are encouraged to consider the NEH Fellowships (not a limited submission) as an alternative option.

Google PhD Fellowships directly support graduate students as they pursue their PhD, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor.

Nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google. The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Our research teams impact technology used by people all over the world and we encourage people of a wide range of backgrounds to apply. We currently offer fellowships in Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the United States.

PhD students from Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the United States, must be nominated for the fellowship by their university. Applications must be submitted by an official representative of the university during the application window. Please see our FAQ for more information.


Eligibility 
Universities should only nominate students that meet the following requirements:

  • Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
  • Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
  • Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
  • Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.
  • Canada and the United States: students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
